Milasande Craft & Design Academy Pilot

Milasande Craft & Design Academy Pilot

At The Herd, our mission has always been deeply rooted in social development through the transformative power of African and contemporary craft, design, Indigenous knowledge, and the preservation of cultural heritage. This work is not just a choice—it’s a calling, shaped by a history of disruption and pain, marked by systemic oppression that continues to affect townships, rural communities, and peri-urban areas.

In October 2024, we embarked on a pivotal journey by launching the Milasande Craft & Design Academy, a pilot initiative made possible through the support of our incredible partners: The Ninevites, Karoo Souk, Abdul Dube, Nomzamo Mji (Tool Box), Sibabalwe Ndlwana (Ingeyeyo), Tina Ratzer, matt lambert, and Margo Ackeer (Margo Makes).

We were met by 20 young, curious minds from North End, a township in Prince Albert. Over the course of two weeks, these participants engaged in an intensive, hands-on program that included:

  • Orientation & Creative Design Thinking
  • Community Engagement & Collaboration
  • Wellness & Mental Well-being
  • Weaving & Natural Dyeing Workshop
  • Woodworking Sessions
  • A Final Exhibition Showcasing Their Work

At its core, this was a deeply human-centered initiative, integrating self and community care with critical conversations on physical and mental resilience. In today’s uncertain world, these dialogues are essential—not just for makers and creatives, but for entire communities. More than just an educational program, the academy reaffirmed craft as a life-affirming practice, rooted in land, history, and identity.

To everyone who contributed to making this experience possible—our collaborators, associates, partners, and supporters—we extend our deepest gratitude. Your belief in this vision has created a lasting impact.

A special and heartfelt thank you to the Nordic Culture Fund, whose generous support turned this dream into reality. You not only empowered the participants of this pilot but have also planted seeds for a future rich with creativity, community, and cultural continuity.

As we reflect on this journey, we remain inspired to keep weaving stories, traditions, and futures together—through the enduring threads of craft and design. Thank you for being part of this meaningful chapter.
