Reflections: Milasande Craft & Design Academy Pilot

Reflections: Milasande Craft & Design Academy Pilot

At The Herd, part of our mission has always been deeply rooted in social development through the transformative pathways of African and contemporary craft, design, Indigenous knowledge, and the celebration and preservation of cultural heritage. This work is more than a choice; it’s a calling shaped by a disruptive and painful history, one marked by systemic oppression that continues to impact townships, rural communities, and peri-urban areas.

In October 2024, we embarked on a significant journey by piloting the Milasande Craft & Design Academy in collaboration with incredible partners and collaborators The Ninevites, Karoo Souk, Abdul Dube, Nomzamo Mji (Tool Box), Sibabalwe Ndlwana (Ingeyeyo),  Tina Ratzer, matt lambert and Margo Ackeer (Margo Makes). Milasande, meaning "grow and multiply," was launched in the heart of North End, a marginalised community in Prince Albert, with the intention of sparking creative curiosity among its youth. Our collective aim was to showcase the immense possibilities within the design and craft sectors, guiding participants towards pathways into the creative economy.

While the pilot began with this vision, it soon evolved into something far greater. At its core, it became a deeply human-centered initiative, integrating practices of self and community care alongside essential conversations about physical and mental resilience. In today’s uncertain times, these dialogues are critical for makers and creatives everywhere. This holistic approach connected us profoundly to both land and community, redefining craft not as a product but as an ongoing, life-affirming practice.

The Milasande pilot was more than a project; it was a collaboration built by makers, for makers, infused with empathy at every stage. Together, we nurtured not only skills but also the spirit, creating a learning environment that inspired resilience, creativity, and connection. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of collective effort and shared purpose.

To everyone who contributed to making this experience possible—collaborators, associates, partners, and contributors—we extend our deepest gratitude. Your dedication and belief in this vision have made a lasting impact.

A special and heartfelt thank you goes to the Nordic Cultur Fund, whose support turned this dream into a reality. You not only empowered the participants of this pilot but has also planted seeds for a future rich with creative possibility and community growth.

As we reflect on this journey, we remain inspired to continue weaving stories, traditions, and futures together through the threads of craft and design. Thank you for being a part of this meaningful chapter.
